Blalock Lakes receives downsizing approval

The large Blalock Lakes residential development approved in 2005 and situated southwest of Newnan got a bit of downsizing Jan. 15 by the Coweta County Commission. Owner Cousins Properties requested that a 131-acre portion of the nearly 3,000-acre property be removed from the development.

Though the property has not been developed, county zoning administrator Angela White said the large residential development was approved by the commission in 2005.
Commenting on the current requests, White said they amounted to a rezoning that would reduce the development’s 2,971 acres to 2,834 acres. The 131.6-acre section being eliminated from the large acreage zoned Community Unit Planned (CUP) is situated on the extreme southwest portion of the property.

Asked by Commission Chairman Bob Blackburn if the section to be removed will go back to its previous larger tract zoning, White said that would be the case. The request for the 131.6-acre tract asked for Rural Conservation zoning. That said, property owner Cousins Properties has not disclosed how the property might be sold.

Another question on the request came from Commissioner Rodney Brooks, who asked if the original Blalock Lakes development for a maximum of 399 homes would still be in place. White said it would, adding that open space within the 2,834 acres would amount to 1,500.82 acres.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve both requests. That approval came with one from county planning staff. White prior to the vote said the requests were consistent with the county comprehensive plan and future land use map.
