PTC mayor, council double their pay

At their first full meeting of the new year, the Peachtree City Council gave themselves a pay boost, doubling their salaries.

The restored pay raises for the mayor and council members will cost the city $33,000 a year.

The raises will double the mayor’s salary from $9,000 to $18,000 a year and council members pay from $6,000 to $12,000 a year.

Councilman Terry Ernst noted that the city employees got a pay raise this year and got bonuses the two previous years, so he felt it was time for council to restore the salary increase for mayor and council.

Councilman Mike King added that when council raised the salaries several years ago, they had good reason to do so, adding that the city will have a study this year on the compensation package for all city employees.

“It’s not that any of the five of us up here need the money so to speak,” King said. “It’s more reimbursement for service and if you want to hold it against me that I make $1,000 a month, like I said before ... If I’m not worth it, fire me in two years, it’s as simple as that.”

Councilman Eric Imker said the news last month that the city’s unaudited budget figures for last year ended $977,000 to the good instead of the projected $700,000 dip into cash reserves, was enough reason for him to approve the salary increases for mayor and council.

The new five-year financial model now shows no millage rate increases and includes money to invest into public works for cart path and road maintenance, Imker added.

“I don’t need the money, but I think I’m worth more than a couple of bucks an hour for my time,” Imker said.

The pay increases were approved in 2007 but were put on hold in the budget before they could be awarded in 2010, and they have gone unfunded in each subsequent budget year as the city has clamped down on spending, including the elimination of city landscaping crews who were replaced by contract services.

Then why not give it to the orphans at Christin City. they do.

Not really. But hey! Enjoy it while you can...which will hopefully be the next election.

The last Administration was outrageous, that is for sure.

I think the point of most pay raises like this are to get them done to encourage more people to run for office in the future. Usually the current members voting on the increase should not benefit from the increase. The fact that these council members do receive the raise is a bit unorthodox, but the amount in question is peanuts.

You never want to create a pay structure where the elected person receives more than they can earn or are worth in the private sector - like Brown on county commission, but I think we are a long way from that in PTC.

What ever happened to us in FC as it relates to elected public service? We have many, many folks who give themselves everyday to the community. Church servants, scout leaders, sport coaches, ect... Who spend time giving back to the community, and many times out of pocket.

Many on here ridicule elected officials who vote for themselves and call it tacky. Is it any less tacky to vote oneself a 100% raise as one of the first orders of business?

Are they worth the money? In most cases, yes, and more. For some, a decrease may be in order.

If we look at payment for services, wouldn't the BOE, be the most deserving, based on responsibility? After all, they manage the largest budget. Shouldn't Dr. Barrow make more money than Mr. Rapson?

I respect Dr. Marchman coming on here last week calling out elected officials to consider their positions service to the community and only reimbursed for those fees related to their duties.

How about we become innovative? Base pay is set low and increases based on what one accomplishes the previous year. If they provide a method to save taxpayer money, they earn a fee based on the savings. If they vote for a needless tax increase, their pay stays the same. Wouldn't that make one go the extra mile? Grade all in December each year and base pay on what each brought to the table. When they know how we feel they can take one of two paths. Work harder and earn more money, or take the easy path and just get by. This would also save the voters from being mocked that if we're unhappy, by the elected who tell us they will just take their ball and go home if we don't like it.

and not need. I don't remember any one of you mentioning when you were 'politicing' that you were going to give yourselves a raise. If you don't need it except to feed your ego, why not let it go into the general fund to cover some of the expenses of the city> Surprised to find we have such a 'surplus' when we were supposed to really be wanting in the finance department just a short time ago. There are plenty of places that money could be put to better use.
