Marvin Walter Whatley, 88, of Peachtree City

Marvin Walter Whatley, 88, of Peachtree City, passed away January 18, 2014.

He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. November 18, 1925. He was a WWII Naval Veteran who served aboard the U.S.S. Thetis Bay, Asiatic Pacific Campaign from 1944 until 1946. He relocated from Chattanooga, Tenn. to Albany, Ga. in 1963 where he was the sales manager for Lonsberg's Music which became Whatley's Music in 1973.

He and Eloise relocated to Peachtree City in 1993. He then worked for United Helping Hand. He was a 32nd degree Mason; a member of the Hasan Shrine Temple, Albany, Legion of Honor and the Jesters; honorary life member of the BPO Elk's #713 and past Exalted Ruler; a member of American Legion Post 30, 40 and 8 and served as Chef de Gare. Mr. Whatley was a past member of First Baptist Church, Albany and currently was a member of First Baptist Church, Peachtree City.

Mr. Whatley was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Wyatt and Elizabeth Mae Johnson Whatley; siblings, Margaret Coyle and William Whatley and son-in-law Griffin Brown.

He is survived by his wife Eloise Johnson Whatley; children, Carl Whatley (Ute) of Peachtree City and Pamela Whatley Brown of Byron, Ga.; grandchildren Ben and Nathan Whatley and Allie and Caleb Brown.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fort Valley, Ga. The family received friends Monday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Peachtree City.

Marvin was an inspiration to us all and he will be greatly missed. His love for his family and friends, and the ever present joy in that wonderful, booming voice of his will forever be remembered. To Marvin, there were no strangers - only friends that he had yet to meet.

Marvin - I love you and am proud to have called you my friend.
