Ways to celebrate Valentine's Day this weekend and next

Valentine’s Day is a week from tomorrow but some people will celebrate with their special someones this weekend. Whether you are interested in dinner, dancing or a show, there is something for you.

If theater is your thing, take a trip up to Tyrone. The Legacy Theatre will present “9 To 5” this weekend and next. The musical, based on the popular movie from the 1980s starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, has been leaving local audiences tapping their toes and rolling in the aisles. Performance times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $15 for ages 12 and under, $22 for seniors and students and $25 for adults. If you’d like to catch a show that is fun and appropriate for the whole family, A Company of Friends will present “Disney’s Little Mermaid Jr.” at the Fayette Train Depot at 250 Lanier Ave. E in Fayetteville on February 7 at 6:30 p.m. (online opening night discount), February 8 at 6:30 p.m., February 9 at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and February 10 at 3 p.m. Tickets range between $10 and $12  online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/291999  and will also be sold at the door prior to each show for $14 if seats remain at show time.

Next Friday, the Clayton State University Center for Continuing Education will present “A Valentine Cabaret” with Elise Witt and Mick Kinneyfrom 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., in the Harry S. Downs Center on the Clayton State main campus in Morrow.

 It’ll be special evening on the shores of Clayton State’s Swan Lake, celebrating Valentine’s Day with music, dancing, laughter and a coffee and dessert bar, and featuring Kinney’s humor and piano playing with Witt’s voice and world music repertoire. Witt, who can sing in seven languages, has previously appeared on the Clayton State campus with the ASO in world-famous Spivey Hall. She has also performed in the Kennedy Center.

If you’d like to put on some fancy clothes and hit the dance floor there are two options this weekend and another dance next weekend.

A Valentine dance will be hosted by the Moonlight Ballroom Dance Club of LaGrange at 8 p.m. Friday at the LaFayette Christian School Gym, 1904 Hamilton Road in LaGrange. The Lou Vallee Band will provide the music, with dancing favorites for all generations. $20 per couple. Dress: Coat and Tie/ Dressy or Cocktail Dress. On Saturday, the annual Angels Among Us Dinner Dance to benefit Fayette Youth Protection Homes takes place at Dolce Atlanta-Peachtree, Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:45 p.m., $100 per person, Black Tie Optional. Next Friday, the Big Band Valentines Dance hosted by Stardust Ballroom Dance Club will take place from 8 – 10:30 p.m. at Christ’s Church at Whitewater. Live music will be provided by Peachtree Jazz Edition, an 18-piece orchestra with vocalist Toni Byrd. Cost of dance includes one hour Foxtrot lesson by instructors Shari Gee & Frank Chafardon. Beginner lesson at 7 p.m. and intermediate at 7:30 p.m. Attire is black tie optional. The cost is $35 per couple/$20 per single at the door. Also on Friday, Cambridge House Enrichment Center will have their fifth annual Affair to Remember at Wesley Woods of Newnan (2280 N. Hwy 29, Newnan) starting with a champagne reception at 6 p.m. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom of Wesley Woods. There will be live entertainment and dancing, as well as a charitable silent auction and raffle. The cost is a minimum donation of $35 per person and all event proceeds benefit Cambridge House Enrichment Center. Another option this Saturday is the MOMS Club Peachtree City South’s 3rd annual Mardi Gras Celebration benefitting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Marcus Autism Center at Flat Creek Country Club at 7 p.m. Event will include dinner, music, a basket auction and a silent auction for higher ticket items. If you’re looking for a restaurant with a special Valentine’s Day themed menu, visit Fayetteville’s City Café and Bakery. Their Valentine’s Day menu will run Feb. 13-16 and will feature some special selections certain to tantalize your tastebuds.
