Mary Irene Shaw, age 92

Mary Irene Shaw, age 92, passed away of natural causes in Peachtree City, Ga. on Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

Mary Irene Kennedy Shaw was born in Easton, Maine on Feb. 29, 1920. She graduated from Easton High School in 1937 as valedictorian. She was a lifelong member of the Rebekah Lodge and served as a state officer in Maine.

She loved her family and her grandchildren. She was an excellent bowler and enjoyed all of her bowling leagues. She was also quite a line dancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents. William and Nora (Grant) Kennedy; her older sisters, Dora Kennedy Oldenburg, Tressa Kennedy Kennedy, Viola Kennedy Cleaves and her brother, Joseph Mahaney (Colleen).

She is survived by her two daughters; Sandra Carter Backus (Ben) of Peachtree City, Ga. and Colleen Carter Mahaney of Nashua, N.H..

She had six grandchildren: Susan Backus Olson (Craig) of Layton, Utah; Shawn Gregory Mahaney (Carolyn) of Billerica, Mass.; Richard Matthew Backus (Laura) of Cumming, Ga.; Jennifer Backus Day (J. Frank) of Birmingham, Ala.; Jeffrey Douglas Backus (Dominique) of Birmingham, Ala.; Mary Mahaney Tighe (Dan) of Nashua, N. H. Her 14 great-grandchildren were a special bonus: Mandy, Kevin, Jordan, Caroline, Ryan, Madison, Mary Patton, Jackson, Franklin, Kenna, Connelly, Holland, Reily and Miller. She also had several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City, Ga. with a visitation from 2 p.m. until service time.

The family request that no flowers be sent due to asthma conditions.

Carmichael-Hemperley located at 135 Senoia Road, Peachtree City, Ga. is in charge of these arrangements.
