Fayette County Commission prepares to vote on East Bypass alignment

The Fayette County Commission is expected to vote Thursday night on the conceptual alignment for the East Fayetteville Bypass.

The final alignment will be considered at a future meeting, but in general the bypass is expected to begin north of Fayetteville at Ga. Highway 85 North at Corinth Road. From there it will follow Corinth Road to Ga. Highway 54 where it will embark on a new road path to County Line Road.

The remainder of the bypass will follow County Line Road to the end of the bypass, which will be at the intersection of South Jeff Davis Drive and Inman Road.

The $39.2 million project will be funded in part by money from the 2003 transportation sales tax along with anticipated federal and state funding that is in the long-range plans for the metro Atlanta area.

Once the conceptual alignment is approved, county staff can work on the details of traffic control at each intersection along with specifics on the northern terminus of the bypass, according to a staff memo presented to the county commission.

The lion’s share of the road will be two lanes, except for where passing lanes are needed. The exception to that rule could be the segment along County Line Road, which may need to be four lanes to accommodate the large number of parcels that access the road currently.

Although county transportation staff have looked at ways to combine access points for those parcels, there aren’t many workable options, officials have said.
