PTC cell tower rules on tap tonight

Potential changes to the city's cell tower ordinance will be discussed tonight by the Peachtree City Planning Commission.

The 7 p.m. meeting will also include "general areas" where new towers might be needed based on information provided by various wireless carriers, according to city staff.

Among the potential changes are reducing the zoning districts in which cellphone towers can be erected. A proposal early last fall to locate several new cell towers in recreation areas drew strong criticism from residents.

City staff has already met with several wireless companies that provide cellular service to get input on where they need new towers in the future. Already Verizon Wireless is pursuing the use of the St. Paul Lutheran Church property for a new celltower. The site is immediately adjacent to the Ardenlee subdivision.

Wireless companies have informed the city that there is a need for cell towers in residential areas, a concept that a number of residents oppose, saying they'd rather have spotty cell service than have to deal with aesthetic issues created by new cell towers. Currently all cellphone towers in the city are located adjacent to major highways and in the city's industrial park.
