Officer struck by vehicle, sustains minor injury

The school resource officer directing traffic at Whitewater Middle School Tuesday morning was struck and slightly injured after being hit by a vehicle leaving the school.

SRO Toby Spencer was directing traffic on Ga. Highway 85 and Christopher Drive when a motorist leaving the school struck him with her vehicle, said Maj. Bryan Woodie with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Spencer on being struck landed on the hood of the vehicle then fell onto the street when the vehicle came to a stop, Woodie said.

“I expect him to be okay,” Woodie said of Spencer, who was transported to Piedmont Fayette Hospital as a precaution.

The Georgia State Patrol investigated the incident and cited the driver with failure to obey an officer directing traffic, said Woodie.

I witnessed a near miss last Friday while leaving SMHS. I was waiting to get out on 74 & go south when a vehicle going south on 74 barely stopped for the officer. She looked like she was traveling too fast to me. The officer was signaling a car leaving the day-care center to go out on 74 northbound & luckily that car waited to see what this woman in the jeep was going to do. The officer talked to her, but I don't think she was cited. Should have been. It was his lucky day I think, to not get hit!

is not without hazards. In 2008, Patrol Deputy David Gilstrap was struck and killed by a motorist while directing traffic at an Oconee County school. People have got to pay attention. This was so senseless.

At the Peachtree City Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, Mike King did a nice job of focusing attention on a few of our own who died far too young serving the rest of us.
