Early voting sparse in Fayette

Through Tuesday morning, 197 people have taken advantage of the early voting offered at the Fayette County Elections office in downtown Fayetteville in advance of the July 20 primary election, officials said.

Voters are encouraged to cast their ballots early, and polls are open Monday through Friday at the elections office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Early voting will continue exclusively at the elections office for several weeks and it will expand July 12-16 with voting locations open at the Peachtree City and Tyrone libraries.

Because so many people have voted early in past elections, the office is cutting down on its number of poll workers working on the July 20 election day in which all polling locations in the county will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to Elections Supervisor Tom Sawyer.

Sawyer said a website maintained by the Georgia Secretary of State’s office contains a trove of useful information for voters including a sample ballot detailing which races they will be voting for and candidate’s websites, if they are available, for those in state races.

The website is On the front page, the voter must enter their first initial, last name, county and date of birth.

Once logged in voters can view the sample ballot, find their polling location for election day and more.

At the polls the primary format requires voters to choose either a Republican or Democratic ballot.

I was glad to go vote on the very first day of early voting. This way if summer gets busy I made my voice heard.
