Jobless rate on the rise in Fayette and Coweta

Jobless numbers in Fayette and Coweta counties in June continued to go in the wrong direction. Coweta County in June had an unemployment rate of 7.2 percent while the jobless rate in Fayette County was 7.1 percent.

The Ga. Dept. of Labor (DOL) on July 24 announced that the unemployment rate for Fayette in June was 7.1 percent, up from 6.8 percent in May and 6.1 percent in April.

Similarly in Coweta, the June jobless rate was 7.2 percent. That compares to a 7 percent rate in May and a rate of 6.2 percent in April.

The largest cities in the two-county area were not immune to the increase in jobless numbers. Newnan in June had an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent. That compares to the 8 percent in May and a rate of 7.3 percent in April.

In Peachtree City, jobless figures for June totaled 6.9 percent, up from the 6.6 percent rate in May and a rate of 5.9 percent in April.

The jobless rate in metro Atlanta areas that include Fayette and Coweta counties continued to rise in June. Unemployment in the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) area rose to 7.6 percent in June while the Three Rivers Commission (TRC) area rose to 8.5 percent.

DOL said unemployment in the 10-county ARC, which includes Fayette, climbed to 7.6 percent in June, up from 7.2 percent in May.

Though the jobless rate increased in June, those numbers are far better than the 8.6 percent unemployment rate evidenced in June 2013.

DOL reported Georgia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for June was 7.4 percent, up from 7.2 percent in May. The rate was 8.4 percent in May a year ago.
