FREE SPEECH — Week of Aug. 27
A reader says, "Bring back Free Speech." I'll meet you halfway: Online, and y'all run it.
Here's the deal: Print version of "Free Speech" is gone, too expensive, never enough space.
But online is another ballgame. Forget that every comment, every forum posted on this site is an example of "Free Speech."
I get it: You want a section called "Free Speech."
So here's what we'll do — Every Monday, we'll create a story with the title of "Free Speech — Week of ####."
We'll kick it off with a paragraph or three about local events/issues, and then you take it from there. Consider the page a jumping off point.
Using the "comment" function, registered users can post to their hearts' content under a weekly section known as "Free Speech."
A new "page" will be up every Monday, but you can continue to access the old ones by searching for "Free Speech."
To get to the page easily, we'll post the title "Free Speech — Week of ###" in the upper right-hand box on the front page online. That's the box marked "Your Say."
Terms of Use rules still apply, but you can get on topic or post off-topic. It's your page.
Then you run it. Post about any topic you want using the "Comments" function.
This is the first one. Who's first?
Here's a topic to start off: Why did the school board majority spend all the system's financial reserves before getting serious about significant cut-backs? Was it denial, ignorance, wretched leadership, poor financial forecasting, an honest effort to delay the pain as long as possible, all of the above, none of the above?
I agree with you on the privacy issue. However, there are a lot of people who doctor shop for painkillers, ect.. and go from one doctor to the other looking for somone to issue the script so they can get high. Pretty sure insurance companies already have this capablitiy too.
that's how it started . drug enforcement started some arm twisting with pharmacies to set up a "voluntary" shared data base of schedule 2 drugs to share between pharmacies to curtail abuse. The pharmacies rather than go to the expense of screening out just SOME drugs just opened up their customer files to other pharmacies. That being done it was a no brainer for medical practices to access the same data bases. SOOO now that we have these files being accessed by any drug store and any medical practice it becomes de facto public information. BUT the important thing is we protect people from themselves.
I went on a trip recently and went to the pharmacy to renew my allergy medicine because it was going to run out the first day into the trip. My insurance company wouldnt approve payment because it wasnt far enough into the 30 day renewal cycle. I am half way across the country at a little mom and pop pharmacy, give them my name, and within two minutes, they had all my info and knew what I needed.
Its a small small world.
Comcrap just sent out their new "screw you" customer pricing sheet.
The biggest tragedy of the upcoming year. I just know this means Romney is winning big.

Yes, read it an weep, all you Barackophiles. They are closing 34 FCC offices and shutting down the Do Not Call programs as a result of this horrendous loss in revenue, but who gives a fig.
I have just returned for the 4th time in many months from a visit to
urgent care with family members, yet again, with respiratory illness? left with 4 meds. . .
"Why in the World are they Spraying" newly released DVD documentary by Michael Murphy, sequeal of "What in the World are they Spraying." Have you taken a look into your once beautiful blues skies TODAY, yesterday or even the day before, how bout in the evening. It doesn't matter what time of the day, look up at the lines and X's in your skies.
Why are there white lines and X's in the skies.
Why are planes spraying lines of toxins in our skies day in and day out.
Why am I always sick?
Why are immune systems compromised?
Why are so many visits to the medical facilities today with a diagnosis of respiratory illness?
Why are many customers in local nutrition stores seeking alternative meds for respiratory illnesses?
Why are trees dying?
Why is our food supply and quality of food shrinking?
Why is your water supply and quality of water shrinking?
Why doesn't any elected official address these mysteries?
Why do officials run from cameras when asked questions about this spraying?
Why would you vote for "any" elected official, especially incumbents who ignore and make light of the skies being trashed daily worldwide?
Why would you trust them?
Why don't you hold those accountable that you vote for, for answers and the well being of society?
Why don't you ask these tough questions BEFORE not AFTER election time?
Why in the world are they spraying??
Why?
Why?
Why?
the votes for Obama. I just knew there was something sinister about that election.
BTW, just what are they spraying and how?
Not too sure about the spraying but what I do know is I'm surrently suffering fromthe first case of Bronchitis I've ever had!
bronchitis is no fun--have had chronic bronchitis since I was four. That plus asthma can make things feel pretty rotten. I hate to go out in public when I have it because you get a lot of funny looks if you get a coughing spell. Get well--let me know if you want some homemade chicken soup--just allow me enough time to go buy a chicken, wring it's neck, pluck it's feathers, singe the rest off and throw it in a pot---or I could run by Publix and pick up a cam of Campbell's. Either way, feel better.

Thanks for the kind words and soup offer. Perhaps most exasperating is that it keeps my wife and I both awake a good part of the night. I'msucking down the Dr prescribed meds since Wednesday--we'll see. Just a really bad experience.
Had it after my last bout of the flu. It ain't fun. Stay on the antibiotics and..........get well!!!!
Take care and repeat these 2 words. Peach schnapps.....peach schnapps...

In pink satin and pearls. Man, I hope she runs in 4 years. Great speech tonight, leader all the way.
(PS) Sorry about the dups above..so much for using the I-phone on here...won't do THAT again.
She gave the best speech of the evening. Even better than Paul Ryan's.
What an amazing woman.
Here's why President Cater is the best ex-President we've had, when his foundation reduces world suffering he should be applauded.
If you have ever seen this disease you understand immediately what I mean.

You''re right. Public broadcasting did a piece on this a few years back. I took the liberty of pointing it out and commenting about it. Not much of a response. I guess it's a credibility issue.
I have heard many here in Fayetteville give credit to President Carter for his humanitarian work here in the states and abroad. He has truly followed the commandments of Jesus.
it's a plain as day, obviously the sidewalk ends. But was that good enough for the GDOT? No way, there is a big giant sign erected stating "sidewalk ends" that is clearly visible from Hwy 74 South. And they wonder why we didn't vote for the SPLOST. I'm guessing this sign cost at least $500 bucks total...maybe more..what a waste of our dollars. Oh yeah, as soon as the property to the south is developed, the sign will be gone, as duh, the sidewalk will continue.
I can't believe that GDOT spends the money on sidewalks..The 74 widening would have been so much more effective with Multi use paths saving tax payer dollars and giving everyone a more usable option..How many people are walking down 74 to Padget Road..
they are catering to the masses of So. Fulton county who walk, don't ride. No MARTA. Although, how long before they bring a stop down there from Oakley Industrial?
GDOT sure knows their audience, I'll give them that. No sign, they would walk off a cliff. Remembuh, if da gubmt. don' tell me to do it, I cain't do it.
I do believe it's Obama credo #5479710999.
Go see it and VOTE!
GP
The Amateur by Edward Klein (I got it from the FC Public Library). Read what many close to Obama have to say, including his personal physician and Rev. Wright.
dealing with a decaying orbit. Even a blind man can see this.
Obama has got to go!!!
Enough said.
I'm only 43pages into "The Amateur" by Edward Klein (NYT BestSeller) and even if I hadn't known it before, it's clear that US voters made a horrible mistake in 2008.
Obama has got to go!!!
Enough said.
"This too shall pass"
Now that is enough said.
"This too shall pass" , meaning by January 2017. I wanted to cheer you up :)
A little early, but what the hey.

Dividend Drive sure makes for a great late night woozie ride home, now doesn't it?
This road should be known as Lawbreakers Parkway, as I have seen many take it to avoid Hwy 74 in getting thru this city outside the watch of the law. Unregistered vehicles seem to love it, too.
Zac Brown better get his servers under control if he wants the goodwill of Fayette County to be on his side. Looks like this guy was more than chicken fried at 2am.
http://www.ajc.com/news/fayette/walking-dead-actor-charged-1507695.html?...
Article says he was at Founders Restaurant & Bar which is owned by the Baggarly family. Zac's place is called Southern Ground Social Club.
My mistake, you are right. I knew that. My apologies to Zac and servers. Please refer my comments to the Baggerlys and their servers. We don't need this concern on our roads. No one does.
The guy still looks more than chicken fried, though.
Totally agree with you....regardless of where he was served, the wait staff should be cognizant of when someone's had too much to drink when possible. But first and foremost, the responsibility lies primarily with the individual to not get behind the wheel when he/she knows they've had a few too many. Putting other people's life in danger when driving drunk is never good.
2 am huh? Latest Founders is open any night is 11pm! Something fishy here?
...who get DUIs and such; they make more money than we 'normal' folk will see in our lifetime but they can't call a cab or pay someone to drive them home/to the hotel, etc??? I just don't get it...
Makes me wonder if they do get way more money than we do. He was driving a PT Cruiser. Hmmm. Not that this is funny or anything, but I wonder at what point the officer realized who he had with him.
Scotty: "But occifer, I don't think you know who you're dealing with. (BUUUURPPP)"
PTCFINEST: "Sir, please step out of the car. No, not crawl, step."
Scotty: "Okay, okay, I know how to follow direction. Gimmme a minute till I can get myself ready.(passes gas)"
PTCFINEST: "No, I said do it now, sir."
Scotty: "I didn't hear you say 'action'. Did you say 'action'?"
PTCFINEST: "Now sir, listen carefully. Get out of the car, NOW."
Scotty: "Occifer, you know who I am. (tee hee) I am one of The Walking
Dead."
PTCFINEST: "Well, you know, if someone hadn't tipped me off, you probably
would be by now, buck-o."
Scotty: "Funny line, occifer. Who wrote that for you, anyways?"
PTCFINEST: "Dispatch, this is car 42. Get a backup on the way."
Dunno....maybe Mr. Wilson lied. Or maybe he was so toasted he didn't realize where he was drinking at. The two establishments are right next to each other. And Zac's place stays open until 2:00am.
.
Cal, thanks for the column.
Could we have just started off a little lighter? Like did everyone see the National Debt Clock the Republicans have put up on the wall in Tampa? How cheerful is that?
To answer the question, in my opinion, it is all of the above. A common theme in baby-boomer mentality. Spend till it's gone, then go in debt and hope a miracle happens to get out of it. Ludicrous.
Just returned from a doctor visit where the interviewing nurse announced it was no longer necessary to provide a list of medications being taken. from now on they would have direct access to most of the drug stores customer files. She then proceeded to read off every prescription filled. At my point in life the privacy thing is pretty irrelevant. If your younger and have health issues that might cause problems you're in trouble.
