'School shooting' Twitter threat debunked by school officials
Fayette County School System officials have debunked a rumor floating around Fayette County High School Thursday about a threatened school shooting at FCHS or at Sandy Creek High School.
The student rumor mill at Fayette County High School was abuzz about a post on Twitter that may have threatened a school shooting that would occur on a Friday, though it did not mention any school in Fayette County, school system officials said.
The rumor was circulating among Fayette County high school students that the tweet said something might happen tomorrow at either Fayette County High or Sandy Creek High School, according to school system spokesperson Melinda Berry Dreisbach. That turned out not to be the case, she said.
One student showed the tweet in question to FCHS Principal Dan Lane, and a subsequent investigation determined that the person who made the tweet has no connections to either school, Berry Dreisbach said.
Parents were notified of the incident and the investigation’s results via the Infinite Campus message system and a letter was being prepared to go home today for parents of students at both schools, she said.
Police told The Citizen that the tweet in question says “imma shoot up school” but did not mention any specific school.
Nonetheless, Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb said there will be an increased presence at the school Friday just as a precaution.
