Ramsey to play role in immigration policy

State Rep. Matt Ramsey will play a pivotal role in shaping Georgia’s take on immigration reform. Ramsey, who lives in Peachtree City, has been appointed to co-chair a joint House/Senate panel that will be looking at solutions to immigration issues to “pick up where Washington D.C. has let us down,” according to House Speaker David Ralston.

“The creation of this joint committee was inspired by the federal government’s continued failure to deal with the problem of illegal immigration and its drain on taxpayer resources in Georgia,” Ralston said.

Joining Ramsey as co-chair will be Sen. Jack Murphy, R-Cumming. The committee consists of 14 members, half coming from each side of the legislature.

Ralston appointed the House members of the panel, while the Senate members were appointed by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.

“If the federal government continues to neglect its responsibility to enforce the law, we’re going to use every option at our disposal to lessen its impact in Georgia,” Cagle said. “The members of this committee will take a broad, in-depth look at ways to confront this problem and offer concrete solutions to improve the regulations we have on the books already.”

The Georgia Board of Regents this month will be considering a policy that would allow the state to deny admission to any illegal immigrant. According to news accounts, only 501 students are recorded as undocumented among a total of about 310,000 enrolled students in Georgia’s public colleges and universities.

In addition to setting the scene for the 2011 legislative session, the committee work may very well frame into a significant issue in the race for governor between former Gov. Roy Barnes, a Democrat, and his opponent former U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal.

Remember this, life is about the choices you make. Come here without documentation or overstay your visa - like aunt moocher - and you're subject to deportation. It's that simple.

Caution - The Surgeon General has determined that constant blogging is an addiction that can cause a sedentary life style.

PTC Observer's picture

The law is the law.

Build the fence, arm the border, and deport those that are here without papers.

Just that simple.

Then we can talk about how to allow workers into the country.

grassroots's picture

No, more like build a giant wall, then a mote of water 100 yards long and 50 yards deep in order to patrol and commerce and no tunneling then a giant wall on the other side. Then add guards flood lights and cameras with high tech tracking. Export the criminals and those that don't pass TB tests then let those that are wanting to stay find an American sponsor for two years, educate them on civics and American history and English.Have a job that's not threatening an American citizen( hard part) Then they assimilate and can stay. Right, can't paint with a broad brush but I did watch my old beloved Los Angeles turn into a 3rd world country. That's gottta stop.

You ain't no engineer!

Ain't no water in most of that 2500 miles of border. 300 feet wide and 150 feet deep moat? A canoe is all they need: a long ladder for the wall.

About 30,000 guards would be needed to cover 24/7. A train track to bring in supplies.
No power there for flood lights.

Anyway even if it worked, they could come in through the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, and all of the Canadian border!
They aren't prepared yet to come in in the middle Atlantic states or from California to Canadian border---not yet.
They do have submarines now.
Lot of money in illegals and in dope.

Just don't hire them---they will go home. Don't shoot it up they will quit. Don't smoke it......

grassroots's picture

There's water from the Pacific Ocean at San Diego to the Gulf of Mexico. dig a ditch and it will flow.

OK, you start on that 150 foot deep+ ditch right away!
What is the elevation difference between San Diego and Florida?

You remind me of those who claim they can put 15,000,000 people to work in 20 months! It took George eight years to lay them off!

The Mexicans are more help than a problem. We have some serious problems to work on.

Now they went and fired Rick Sanchez yesterday! That is racism!

This thing sounds like "talking" a lot about illegal immigrants, but doing nothing to put any in jail!
Blaming Washington for not eliminating them is stupid.

Any local police officer can arrest an illegal when he finds one but they don't. They don't want the responsibility because their boss told them not to arrest them---the jails are full.

I didn't hear this state electee say anything about taking that kind of action!
Talking about neglecting responsibility!

They are going to frame into a significant issue in the Governor's race!!!!

Isn't that wonderful---they are against illegals but won't take any significant action to eliminate even one illegal.

Ask your sheriff or police chief how many he has ordered arrested on roofs, lawns, bars, and if he asks for proof of citizenship of all those listed every week in the paper for various offenses. Jose Gonzales, drunk and disorderly and no driver's license!

It is all BS. By the way I'm for signing them up, and identifying them for possible citizenship if they make an effort.

What a joke! Both Ramsey and this stupid panel. This is all very simple. Why do illegal immigrants cross the border? Because companies here in America will hire and pay them less wages than US citizens. But rather than go after the companies who hire the illegals our laws and police target the illegals. Why? Because political swine like Ramsey feed at the trough of big corporation donations to their campaigns. Should illegals be shipped back to Mexico or wherever? Absolutely!! But take away the jobs and you will see a tremendous drop in the numbers of illegal immigrants entering this country. Recent studies have shown with the recession and the lack of jobs, this is the case. But no, we will now have a panel stacked with fat cat Republicans like Ramsey who live off big corporation donations "studying" the problem. What a joke....

To so many people the illegal immigrant issue is so black and white, but they do not know the gray areas. I have a friend from Brazil who is in this country illegally. He holds a degree in accounting, he has a medical condition and he can not get the proper medicines in Brazil for this condition - the pharmaceutical industry in Mexico and Brazil is a disaster because their government patent office are so inept that big Pharma can not produce much needed drugs for the people in these countries.

There are no laws of eminent domain. I saw Mexico and Bolivia take over railroads from U.S. companies without these companies having any recourse.

The chicken industry in this country hires blacks and whites and they quit rapidly, some quit by noon on Monday. I set up one system that was used among the several poultry processors, but we could not validate the data against the Social Security system because they failed to cooperate. I worked with one plant that had 2,000 employees and we had to print over 4,000 w-2s because the was such turnover among the blacks and whites that were hired and trained.

There are so many former Mexicans who have become American citizens and they are doing excellent work, but they are being painted with the broad brush of hatred and bigotry and this has to stop.

PTC Observer's picture

"I have a friend from Brazil who is in this country illegally"

Deport him.

Cyclist's picture

immediately!!!!!!!!!!

Caution - The Surgeon General has determined that constant blogging is an addiction that can cause a sedentary life style.

Wouldn't it have more effect to just walk into the chicken factory and check all of the workers for identification and SS numbers, and when proof was found that some were illegals----go straight to the offices of the owner, and managers, arrest them for hiring illegals and hold them for trial and a one year sentence?

Then in order to start up the chicken factory again, give those managers and owners the the choice of working in the gut factory for the year instead of serving the time?

Bet that scores of companies would immediately send their illegals out who would head home due to no work here!

PTC Observer's picture

Deport them, Americans will fill the void at some price.

You forgot. The Americans felt that it was beneath their dignity to work there.

PTC Observer's picture

OK, deport him anyway.

I failed to mention. If there was any doubt INS (now ICE) was invented in.

Cyclist's picture

to control the problem.

Caution - The Surgeon General has determined that constant blogging is an addiction that can cause a sedentary life style.

Exactly!! Go after the companies that hire the illegals. Take away the incentive for the illegals to cross the border in the first place. But again, it ain't gonna happen with these companies donating millions of dollars to fat cat crooked Republicans like Matt Ramsey, Ronnie "Do Nothing" Chance and the others. It is way easier both in terms of law enforcement and negative impact on the campaign contributions to go after the illegals rather than the companies. This panel is such a frigging joke and with the likes of Ramsey has zero credibility. Just an election year gimmick.

Well I tried not to write quite so direct as you but it is a simple solution.

States and localities, such as Fayette County and it's cities, do not want to arrest any illegals at the companies in Fayette.

It is a simple matter to ask for the I-9 form from these companies for all employees.

They don't want the state and federal government to interfere in our business here except in cases of this nature!

I assure you if Fayette companies did not hire illegals nor use contractors who do, that we would be free of them within a few months!

If they wait for a working "fence" to do the job, we will have them forever!!!! They know that. It is a vote getting thing for people who don't understand the thing.

PTC Observer's picture

They do that now. I can't say all companies do this but most of the bigger ones do, the fines are too steep. It's the small businesses that are the problem, landscapers, construction, roofers, etc.

So, how do they really know? They don't, that's the problem. The only way to stop it is to have a national ID card. Don't think that one will pass Congress anytime soon.

You simply complicate the issue! Illegals do not work for General Electric, General Motors, IBM, etc. They do check and call SS for an authorized number!

Do you want a federal I.d. card? Easy to duplicate anything now.

Do you consider chicken slaughterhouses and hog slaughter houses small or big? How about the guy who mowers PTC grass and his crews? Are PTC developers and builders "small?" Are these "hire by the hour" places "small?"

You know and I know that these "small" companies do not want to know!!
They pick them up on the street corner quite often. Yet they don't want the federal or state government to control who they hire.

DON'T HIRE THEM AND THEY WILL GO AWAY!

This didn't seem to be a deterrent to aunt moocher.

Caution - The Surgeon General has determined that constant blogging is an addiction that can cause a sedentary life style.

Don't blame that poor lady for being President Obama's aunt!

She, no doubt was in danger in Africa. Who isn't?

Cyclist's picture
She, no doubt was in danger in Africa. Who isn't?
I'm shocked!!!!

Really, I have her pegged as a poster child of a system gone completely wrong. Aunti moocher is right up there with Elvira Arellano.

Of course, I'm a little curious how someone that makes over $400,000 a year can let a relative live in scarce government housing when his fellow citizens are in difficult straits. But you know the penniless aunt moocher did have legal counsel at her last hearing. That doesn't come for free.

Caution - The Surgeon General has determined that constant blogging is an addiction that can cause a sedentary life style.

Yeah, people like that shouldn't have legal representation!

PTC Observer's picture

Ok, Ok, don't yell!

Now how are you going to keep "them" from hiring Illegals? Come think of it all those businesses are racially profiling or they would only pick up Hispanics. Why don't we just get them for racial discrimination?

Even if it kills him because he can not get the proper meds?

PTC Observer's picture

He is ILLEGAL - deport him.

So we should just open the borders and allow anyone in; right?

Are you a native American? Or did your forefathers come here from another country to escape tyranny? Mine did. If your family is in danger in your native lands because of drug lords or a Hitler or a Castro what would you do?

PTC Observer's picture

Illegal

Illegal, unlawful, illegitimate, illicit, criminal can all describe actions not in accord with law.

Criminal, get it?

Either we have a nation of laws or a nation of men. Meaning either we have a law that makes it ILLEGAL to immigrate to the USA without permission and enforce it, or we simply let people do whatever they want to and not have a nation at all.

There are plenty of reasons to allow people into this country legally, we have been doing so since the Republic was founded. You can't mix legal examples with illegal activity, it doesn't work.

Hope this is clear.

Cyclist's picture

So we should just open the borders and allow anyone in; right?

Caution - The Surgeon General has determined that constant blogging is an addiction that can cause a sedentary life style.

If my family could have returned to their homeland - FIGHT! But my ancestors didn't have that choice. However, I'm grateful they survived the 'voyage' - and helped to build my country. We have laws that should be implemented equally for all illegals.

PTC Observer's picture

Lincoln tried to return the blacks to Africa, they didn't want to go. The Congress allocated significant funds for this purpose before the Civil War.

Even with offers of money, they didn't want to go. Reason?

It was their country too, even though they had been slaves. That's right good ole Lincoln didn't want to return the slaves, he wanted to send back freedmen.

You understand our history!!

PTC Observer's picture

more than you imagine.

So we should just open the borders and allow anyone in; right?

No - but we should implement our laws equally to all illegals, not just those who are a different color/Spanish speaking. What about Canadians, English, French, Russians, Africans, Asians etc. who 'blended in' as students or employees and never bothered to renew their work permits or student visas? What about those fishermen on the east coast who don't speak English - but have blue eyes and 'white' skin? Arrest those who are criminals and deport them. Tighten border security. But treat all illegals the same. . .not just those who 'appear' different.

Cyclist's picture

You are absolutely correct.........deport all illegals. As for the blending in thingy...that's already the case in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Caution - The Surgeon General has determined that constant blogging is an addiction that can cause a sedentary life style.

Who settled that area of our country first? 'They' were there when 'we' arrived!! I think 'whites', Asians, and Blacks did the blending.

Cyclist's picture
Who settled that area of our country first? 'They' were there when 'we' arrived!! I think 'whites', Asians, and Blacks did the blending.
It was the European Spaniards that claimed those areas for the King of Spain. Of course one could go back to the pre-Columbian era when the ancestors of the indigenous people or Indians settled.

Caution - The Surgeon General has determined that constant blogging is an addiction that can cause a sedentary life style.

'Claiming' Some interpret that as complete dismissal of the 'humans' who already inhabited the region. Oh well . . . it depends on ones perspective.

PTC Observer's picture

"But treat all illegals the same. . .not just those who 'appear' different."

I believe if you check you will find that is the way the law is written.

The fact is that most illegals are from south of the boarder, therefore most of the "round up" will occur around these folks.

We should deport all of them, every single illegal we can find, back to Mexico, back to Europe, back to China, it doesn't matter where they come from.

,
I believe if you check you will find that is the way the law is written.

I'm emphasizing 'implement'. Rounding-up one group - and ignoring another is not following the 'law'. The Russian Mafia is causing havoc in certain areas of our society - but we haven't started 'rounding-up' all Russians.

PTC Observer's picture

But the Russians aren't as easily identified, they don't stand on street corners looking for work.

Just for the record, we should round up ALL illegals and deport them.

MajorMike's picture

Yes, illegals are being painted "with the broad brush of hatred". Bigotry has absolutely nothing to do with it except as a whining excuse for those who condone the invasion of our country, and the destruction of our infrastructure, our legal system, and indeed our way of life. Legal immigrants are generally accepted in this country with open arms. That's not just my opinion, that's FACT. Your bogus talking points are ALL right out the open borders stated agenda, including falling back to the "compassion" ploy when all other arguments fail. I noticed that you used the "americans won't do this work" argument too.

I have a serious problem, on several levels, with you aiding and abetting the illegal actions of your "friend" from Brazil. Tell Your friend to go home now and if you are here illegally - YOU GET OUT TOO.

Mi casa es no su casa!!

NUK_1's picture

Wow, this sounds straight from La Raza. I'm surprised you used the word "illegal" since all the pro-illegal immigration crowd screams whenever the news media refers to illegals as being just that, "illegal immigrants" instead of the asinine description of "undocumented."

You generally harbor people you know are committing a crime against the country? Nice. You end with how "former Mexicans have become American citizens" and that's the point: no one is complaining about LEGAL immigration here, it's the illegals that are swamping the country and its resources and also depressing wages all while exposing how insecure our nation's borders are that is the problem, not any kind of "hatred" towards Mexicans or whoever.

Where's the gray area? You either are here illegally or legally. It is that simple.

Observerofu's picture

No not us but Mexico. They are building a wall on the Guatemala border.
Calderon chastises us for trying to build a wall while they do it on their Southern border. I guess he can come back after November and let the Democrats give him another standing ovation.
