Cafeteria managers prepared to respond to safety issues

School safety is everyone’s job and Fayette’s School Nutrition Program managers are doing their part by undergoing training in fire safety and CPR, according to Melinda Berry-Dreisbach, spokesperson for the Fayette County School System.

Kitchen fires are one of three leading causes of school fires according to the U.S. Fire Administration. School Nutrition Program managers recently participated in fire safety training at the LaFayette Educational Center, she said.

With assistance from the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services, managers learned ways to prevent fires from happening, and in the event one should occur, how to properly extinguish it, Berry-Dreisbach said.

Managers are also prepared to respond to a child or colleague in distress thanks to CPR training. Led by School Health Services Specialist Debbie King, the managers learned the correct way to administer the life-saving technique as well as use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), Berry-Dreisbach said.

Hopefully the cafeteria managers will never have to put their safety skills to use, but if a situation does occur, they are ready, Berry-Dreisbach said.
