Man, cat safe after Tyrone house fire Tuesday

A house fire early Tuesday morning in Tyrone left approximately 50 percent damage to a home on Nature’s Path. The homeowner and his cat were unharmed in the blaze.

Fayette Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Pete Nelms said multiple units responded to the fire after the homeowner placed the call at 2:33 a.m.

The first apparatus arrived at 2:41 a.m., Nelms said, and had the fire under control by 3:27 a.m. Units arriving at the scene found flames visible in the rear of the home and from the roof.

Units at the scene included three engines, two medic trucks, a quint ladder truck, rescue truck, a firefighter squad truck and the battalion commander.

Nelms said the house and contents sustained approximately 50 percent damage. But things could have been much worse for the homeowner and his cat that was found by firefighters inside the house.

Nelms said the homeowner was alerted to the presence of the fire after the smoke detector activated.

“The overriding issue is that the smoke detector potentially saved this man’s life,” Nelms said. “Smoke detectors save lives.”

October is National Fire Prevention Month.

Nelms said the cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
