Fayette Board of Education hopefuls to speak at Nov. meeting

The Fayette County Board of Education is still accepting the names of Post 5 residents interested in filling the unexpired term of the seat held by the late Sam Tolbert. Superintendent Jeff Bearden told board members Oct. 17 that interested candidates will make brief presentations at the Nov. 7 work session.

The school board last month decided that the methodology to fill the seat will include having those interested submit a letter of interest and a resume by Oct. 31. Bearden in an update on the issue Monday night said those submitting their intent by the Oct. 31 deadline will make a five-minute presentation at the Nov. 7 work session to outline their interest in the position and to give the board the ability to ask questions of the candidates.

Bearden previously noted that all discussion by the board pertaining to the appointment must occur in open meetings.

There is a provision in the legislation for the governor to appoint a board member within 45 days if one has not been appointed by the school board, though Bearden said the school board will likely not be held to a timeline as long as the appointment of a candidate is underway.

A check with the school system attorney determined that the candidate appointed by a majority of the board members would serve for the full unexpired term that will extend through 2014.

Interested candidates are required to reside in the Post 5 area. Information pertaining to the Post 5 seat can be found on the school system’s website at

The website information also includes a blow-up of the map identifying the Post 5 geographical area.
