Play-in games set for Region 4-AAAAA

Three schools in Fayette have learned who they will play this Friday for a shot at the state playoffs.
Because Region 4-AAAAA is split into two divisions, the top four teams in each division play each other the final week of the regular season. The top team on one side plays the fourth team on the other side, the second-place team on one side plays the third-place team on the other, and so on. The higher-ranked team gets to host each game.

Creekside won Division B with a 4-0 record in subregion play. McIntosh came in second at 2-2, winning the head-to-head tiebreaker over Whitewater, who finished with the same record. Northgate is fourth at 1-3, the same record as Starr’s Mill, but Northgate also won the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Other tiebreakers are allowed under GHSA rules after head-to-head competition, but in this case it decided every slot.
Division A is led by Mundy’s Mill, followed by Union Grove, Drew, Ola, Forest Park and Mt. Zion.
According to the GHSA setup, McIntosh will host Drew and Whitewater will travel to Union Grove this Friday. The other games to determine playoff positions are Northgate at Mundy’s Mill and Ola at Creekside.

The winners of these four games will move on to the state playoffs. Their seeding depends upon who wins each game; for instance, if a fourth-place team from one subregion upsets the top team from the other subregion, it would affect the final region seedings.

The format also calls for the fifth-place teams in both subregions to square off Friday, albeit with no state playoff implications. The host team has been predetermined, with the Division A team hosting last year’s game. Thus, Starr’s Mill will host Forest Park in this week’s game.
