Years ago, ABC’s Wide World of Sports advertised its programs presenting the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” But what about when the thrill of victory comes and, having done nothing wrong — in fact, having done everything right — the agony of defeat comes anyway?

When change comes

Change is inevitable. It cannot be stopped. It will always happen. Often the change comes when those in authority resign, die, receive new assignments, or otherwise vacant the scene. When this happens, there is almost always some uneasiness, concern, anxiety, and confusion.

A friend was telling me that, not long ago, he was in a group undergoing training at a local hospital. The members of the group were instructed to introduce themselves and share some personal information, including where they attended church.

It is fairly common these days for military veterans to hear from grateful citizens, “Thank you for your service.” Indeed, whenever I see someone with a military T-shirt or baseball cap designating them as a veteran, I express the same sentiment.

Smells and memories

I was with someone recently who was using one of those “vape” things, “E-cigarettes,” that help people to either cut down on smoking or to smoke without the tar and carcinogens. From the vapor, or “smoke,” came a very pleasant aroma that triggered something happy in my mind.

The Memorial Day weekend is upon us. Memorial Day, according to History.com, is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, and honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

A benefit of a long tenure

I read recently that the average tenure for pastors is 18 months. In my early days, I served as a youth minister for a year in one church and for a year in another. As a pastor, I served in my first church for a year before moving to serve about two years in another.
