When I was a kid, I spent a good part of my summers at the Legion Pool in Kingsport, Tenn. Two or three miles from where I lived, I could get on the city bus that stopped just a few yards from my house and be dropped off at the pool.

I read a few days ago that my denomination’s senior bishop in Africa, The Most. Rev’d Bernard Njoroge is retiring. He will be stepping down as a member of the International Patriarch’s Council, as General Secretary of Kenya, and as the Bishop of Nairobi.

John Holloway was a pastor to me, one of two men in my life who completely fulfilled that role. I first met him in 1995 when, after he called me on the telephone in response to an inquiry I made, we met for lunch in Griffin, Ga.

As I write these words, the logs on the outside woodpile are covered with ice. As is my rear deck, my car, the trees in the yard, and the driveway which, effectively, isolates us and confines us to the house.

As far as snows go, the recent snow wasn’t much. Where I live, in Coweta County, Ga., the accumulation amounted to 2.5 inches. In northeastern Tennessee, where I grew up, the snow was 5 inches.
