John Holloway was a pastor to me, one of two men in my life who completely fulfilled that role. I first met him in 1995 when, after he called me on the telephone in response to an inquiry I made, we met for lunch in Griffin, Ga.

As I write these words, the logs on the outside woodpile are covered with ice. As is my rear deck, my car, the trees in the yard, and the driveway which, effectively, isolates us and confines us to the house.

As far as snows go, the recent snow wasn’t much. Where I live, in Coweta County, Ga., the accumulation amounted to 2.5 inches. In northeastern Tennessee, where I grew up, the snow was 5 inches.

In the December 2013 issue of U.S. Catholic, the cover story is “Real Presence — What Catholics with developmental disabilities bring to the table.” On the inside of the magazine, there is a photo of a teenager with Down Syndrome leading the processional and carrying the processional cross.

Once again this December, I plan to pull at least one four-hour shift, and hopefully more, sitting or standing behind a table at a big box store on a Saturday or Sunday smiling at people passing by, wishing them, “Merry Christmas,” and offering lollipops free to kids.
