In the December 2013 issue of U.S. Catholic, the cover story is “Real Presence — What Catholics with developmental disabilities bring to the table.” On the inside of the magazine, there is a photo of a teenager with Down Syndrome leading the processional and carrying the processional cross.

Once again this December, I plan to pull at least one four-hour shift, and hopefully more, sitting or standing behind a table at a big box store on a Saturday or Sunday smiling at people passing by, wishing them, “Merry Christmas,” and offering lollipops free to kids.

I was about to start the vehicle when I noticed a handwritten noted stuffed under the driver’s side windshield wiper. I had picked up a few things at the Publix at the Thomas Crossroads Shopping Center in Coweta County, not far from my home.

Receiving criticism

When I was a younger man, just beginning my ministry, an older gentleman took me under his wing and gave me a warning and some advice. He said, “The profession you are entering means that you are going to receive more criticism than you can possibly imagine.” That was the warning.

What if?

A few days ago, a gentleman who is a leader in our church, Richard Thompson, came to the church office.

He dropped off something for someone in our congregation and then, after some conversation, he shared that he had seen an interesting question on a sign somewhere.
