It's yard sale time

Warmer weather means only one thing around our house: it’s time for some much needed spring cleaning. Usually, we spend a week or so deep cleaning the house and gathering all the junk we’ve collected over the last year. And by our junk, I mean my junk.

During those seven magical years spent growing up at 110 Flamingo Street, I learned many things about life. One of the first was rich kids lived on The Duke of Gloucester; the not-so-rich kids lived on Flamingo Street.

Math is adorable

Growing up at 110 Flamingo Street, I learned math many different ways, both in and out of school. When math was just numbers it was easy to understand. When words were added, math got complicated and sometimes extremely painful.

Painful toys

My parents always said the same thing when they bought us a new toy: “Follow the instructions and you won’t get hurt.” If you’re a regular reader of this column, you already know normally we didn’t and someone always did.

The Easter Bunny has come and gone, and like many families, we have countless pictures and videos of excited little ones running around in colorful dresses.

Clown stilt fighting

Writing about clowns on stilts could be considered a delicate balancing act, but I assure you, the story below did happen as written or at least to the best of my memory, that is. After all, I did fall and land on my head.

Gardening is for squares

Disrupting the routines of old folks or babies isn’t a good idea. You can’t teach old dogs new tricks. Someone who doesn’t want to change – won’t. Don’t confuse me with the facts. Keep hitting yourself on the head with a hammer, soon you’ll end up with a sore head.

A childhood memory

This story was written almost 50 years ago but actually only made it down on paper just last week. Swirling around in my head in the distant fog, a childhood memory was jarred loose and brought back to the surface by a recent event.

I quit

Quit, give up, or surrender. No matter how you say it, I’ve had enough and I’m doing it.

Growing up at 110 Flamingo Street, Dad used to say, “Winners never quit, and quitters never win.” Now that I’m an official quitter, I’ve got news for Dad: He was right.

The morning routine

You just don’t mess with the routines of babies or old folks. That’s a fact. They get really cranky really fast if you do. Of late, I’ve been called all three – a baby, old, and cranky. Unchanging and predictable – been called that too. Just ask The Wife.
