Legislators’ gift ban passes House

A bill that would almost completely ban lobbyists’ gifts to Georgia legislators has a slightly unpleasant side effect: anyone attempting to speak on behalf of another group of people more than five times a year — even if they are unpaid — would be classified as a lobbyist and will be required to register with the state and pay a $25 fee.

Despite that hindrance, House Bill 142 was approved Monday by the Georgia House of Representatives and will be taken up by the Senate later this session, most likely at the committee level first. Read More»

Ramsey named to national committee

State Representative Matt Ramsey, R-Peachtree City, has been appointed to serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) law and criminal justice committee by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge).

New rules coming just to lobby your councilman or commissioner

A bill that would almost completely ban lobbyist gifts to any Georgia legislator, save for certain specific circumstances, would also limit any citizen’s ability to advocate for or against legislation on behalf of any group with most elected officials across the state, even down to the town council.

The results of the special election to fill the District 71 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives that includes a large part of east Coweta County and a portion of Peachtree City’s west side are in. Voting Tues. for empty House D-71 seat

Tuesday is the last chance for Peachtree City and east Coweta residents to vote in the special election to fill the vacant District 71 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives.

Although Coweta resident Robert Stokely won election last year, he withdrew from the position in December after being offered a full-time job in Coweta Magistrate Court. That has left the district, which encompasses much of east Coweta County and two small areas in northwest Peachtree City, without a representative as the general assembly cranked up several weeks ago. Governor will pick replacement for Judge McMillian

With Gov. Nathan Deal appointing Fayette County State Court Judge Carla Wong McMillian to the state Court of Appeals, a vacancy will be left in a very busy court at the justice center in Fayetteville.

Arrangements are being made for a senior (retired) state or superior court judge to fill in until Deal can name a successor for Judge McMillian. She will be sworn in to her new office Thursday afternoon at the Capitol. Read More»
