Breast cancer support group is meeting Feb.17

A breast cancer support group will meet in Fayetteville Feb. 17.

The group is open to women of all ages who are currently fighting or have survived breast cancer.

The group will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness center on the third floor of the Piedmont Fayette Hospital, 1267 Building (West Entrance), 1267 Highway 54 West.

Diverse blood donors needed

All types needed

The Red Cross is calling for blood donors as unique as the patients it serves, and has set up more than 100 donor locations around the Metro Atlanta area to ensure an adequate blood supply.

The effort is being made in honor of Black History Month in February, and also in the spirit of Dr. Charles Drew, an African American surgeon who was the first medical director of the American Red Cross and a modern blood-banking pioneer.

All blood types are currently needed to help maintain a diverse and sufficient blood supply, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. Read More»

Free dental exams honor MLK legacy of service

Georgians have created a multitude of unique ways to celebrate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the national day set aside to honor the state’s native son, but free dental screenings might qualify as one of the most original ideas.

It’s a tradition in the Dental Hygiene program at Clayton State University, though.

Dental hygiene students, staff and faculty will provide free dental screenings, x-rays, and oral health education to patients as part of the school’s annual MLK Day of Service. Read More»

National  PANDAS / PANS Awareness Day is Thursday, Oct. 9. The purpose is to raise awareness of these frightening illnesses that cause sudden and acute behavior changes in children following a bout of strep or other infectious trigger. On June 7 the Southern Conservation Trust and Southside Cycling Club hosted National Trail Day — a collection of outdoor events held annually to celebrate America’s trail systems — for a second time at The Ridge Nature Area.
