Chiefs fall from unbeaten ranks – Starr’s Mill 42, McIntosh 27

The McIntosh Chiefs started the 2013 season with six straight wins, and with a 20-0 lead at Starr’s Mill they appeared to be on their way to seven.

Cafeteria managers prepared to respond to safety issues

School safety is everyone’s job and Fayette’s School Nutrition Program managers are doing their part by undergoing training in fire safety and CPR, according to Melinda Berry-Dreisbach, spokesperson for the Fayette County School System.

Kitchen fires are one of three leading causes of school fires according to the U.S. Fire Administration. School Nutrition Program managers recently participated in fire safety training at the LaFayette Educational Center, she said.

Landmark 17, Our Lady of Mercy 13

The Landmark War Eagles (6-0, 2-0) rebounded from a slow start with a strong second half and hung on in the final minute for a 17-13 win over Our Lady of Mercy’s Bobcats (1-4, 1-1).

The first quarter was all OLM, as the Bobcats kept the ball on the Landmark end of the field all but two plays the entire period. The War Eagles prevented an early score by blocking a field goal attempt, but OLM quarterback Jameson Vest scored on a 3-yard run with 1:19 left in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. Read More»

Coweta SAT results beat state average

The 2013 SAT scores are in and Coweta County’s high schools outscored the state average. Coweta’s composite average of 1,475 points on the college entrance exam was 23 points above the state average of 1,452.

“The average scores for each of Coweta County’s three high schools were above the state average in 2013, and Coweta’s high schools outscored national averages in some instances,” said school system spokesman Dean Jackson.

Northgate High School students scored 1,501 while Newnan High School students scored 1,473 and East Coweta High School students scored 1,457. Read More»

Mold found in several Fayette schools

Mold was found in several Fayette County schools once the school year began. A number of teachers reported symptoms of allergies and the mold has been removed.

Fayette’s SAT race is led by McIntosh

Peachtree City’s McIntosh High School is marked by at least two distinctions this week: An unbeaten football team and the county’s highest test score average on the 2013 Scholastic Aptitude Test.

McIntosh leads in the SAT race with a 1,644-point average, and Starr’s Mill High School is right behind with an SAT average of 1,622. They are followed by Whitewater, Sandy Creek and Fayette County High.

McIntosh 28, Mundy’s Mill 27: The Chiefs (5-0, 2-0) maintained their perfect record and matched their 2012 win total with a win at Twelve Oaks Stadium in Clayton County. After a bye next week, McIntosh will host Whitewater Oct. 11.

Drew 35, Starr’s Mill 34: The Panthers (2-3, 1-1) fell on the road in Clayton County and will host Creekside next Friday.

Whitewater 35, Forest Park 8: The Wildcats (4-1, 2-0) took the field Thursday at Southern Crescent Stadium in Clayton County and won their fourth straight. They will travel to Northgate next Friday. Read More»

Sandy Creek 54, Fayette County 19

Ashton Jackson hauls in a pass and slips between two Sandy Creek defenders. Later in the game he caught a 91-yard touchdown pass for Fayette County.

The Sandy Creek Patriots (3-0-1, 1-0) broke the 50-point barrier for the third straight game, winning 54-19 over the Fayette County Tigers (0-4, 0-1) in a Region 5-AAAA battle in Fayetteville.

After putting up 55 points against Newnan and 54 against East Coweta, the Patriots are averaging 47.5 points per contest and now have a 43-game regular-season unbeaten streak. Read More»
