Landmark to honor coach Friday

This Friday has been designated as Phil Williams Night at Landmark Christian School, as a beloved former coach is to be honored for his years of service to the community.

Before the 7 p.m. baseball game against Chapel Hill, there will be a 6:45 ceremony honoring Williams. All former players, parents and friends from the Douglas County area as well as the Landmark Christian School community and others are invited for the celebration.

The game is an early-season matchup between two of last year’s playoff teams. Admission for students and adults is $5 each.

Chiefs shine on Westlake track

The McIntosh Chiefs opened their track season over the weekend at the Lions Chick-fil-A Showcase at Westlake.

The Chiefs got wins from Taylor Huntley in the 800 meters (1:59.77), Alyssa LeClaire in the 1600 (5:43.32) and Nicole Zaubi in the 3200 (12:50.34).

Morgan Frederick won the high jump (4-08.00) and the girls’ 4x800-meter relay team was also a winner (10:45.85).

Lady Panthers win 3-0 over Lambert

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers soccer team traveled to Suwanee Tuesday night and picked up a 3-0 win over Lambert.

After a scoreless first half, the team got on the board when Rachel Catlett’s corner kick found Carly Pressgrove on the back post and she volleyed the ball into the net.

Molly Moroney was played in behind and beat the keeper twice, hitting the post first and following her rebound to double the advantage.

Later it was Moroney marauding forward again with a fierce shot the keeper parried to Ashley Broderick who hammered home to complete the 3-0 victory. Read More»

P.A.L.S. pageant is Saturday at Starr's Mill High School

High school can be tough without a pal. P.A.L.S. (Peers Are Linking Students) clubs are about building friendships between students with and without disabilities and creating lasting bonds, all while having fun.

P.A.L.S. club members forge friendships by participating in a variety of activities together, both within and outside of school. Read More»

Scott to honor students at art competition

Congressman David Scott will host an awards ceremony to honor all participating students of his 12th Annual Congressional High School Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.” To date, Congressman Scott has awarded over $300,000 in scholarships to local student artists.

During the ceremony, top winners will be announced. The first place entry from Congressman Scott’s district will join other first place winners from around the country and be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Read More»

Chiefettes at National Dance Team finals

Chiefettes at National Dance Team finals

The McIntosh Chiefettes dance team recently competed at the UDA National Dance Team Championship where they made it to the final round of competition and placed 18th out of 81 teams.

Previously they were crowned 2014 State Champions in Pom and Jazz at the UDA Georgia Dance Championships, the fifth year in a row they have won double state titles.Cortland Anderson won the Solo division, while Darby Smith placed third, Ally Cox fourth, Kristen Plunkett sixth and Kirsten Fink ninth. Chiefs, Tigers, Patriots win first-round games

Three local boys' teams prevailed in their first-round state basketball tournament games Saturday.

In AAAAA, the McIntosh Chiefs won at home 69-53 over Lakeside-Evans 53 to move into the round of 16. Their next game is on the road at Northside-Columbus, who beat Richmond Hill 75-63.

The Whitewater Wildcats saw their season come to an end in Warner Robins, where they fell 60-47.

In AAAA, the Sandy Creek Patriots downed Dalton 67-40 to earn a second-round game on the road against Johnson-Gainesville, who won 83-71 over Stone Mountain. Read More»

Coweta names finalists for teacher of the year

The Coweta County School System has named the 2014 teachers of the year for each of its 31 public schools. Chosen by their peers, the teachers will be honored at a ceremony on May 1. The May 1 meeting will also include the announcement of the school system’s 2014 Teacher of the Year. Read More»
