Common Core math books pass Fayette BoE’s test 4-1

New math textbooks to be used in the Fayette County School System were approved by a 4-1 vote Monday by the Fayette County Board of Education. The motion also came with a provision that will examine how Fayette students can compete globally and will lead to an opinion that assesses both traditional and integrated math offerings.

The lone dissenting vote in the 4-1 approval came from board member Mary Kay Bacallao, who said her opposition dealt only with the textbook adoption portion of the motion. Read More»

New Fayette school sup’t. rolls out 90-day plan

Incoming Superintendent Jody Barrow gave the Fayette County Board of Education a look at his plans for his first 90 days that begin July 1.

Barrow on June 11 told school board members that prior to July 1 he has already received a significant amount of school system data from various departments and has begun reviewing school board policies and procedures. Barrow also conducted a stakeholder survey that has been posted on the school system’s website for the past several weeks and has begun a review of the 2013-2014 budget.

Two video broadcast students at the Central Educational Center (CEC) have been awarded a 2013 High School Student Production Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), Southeast.

NATAS has given an Outstanding Achievement award to a video project produced by CEC students Amber Rogers of Newnan High School and Leah Galliot of Northgate High School in the General Assignment Excellence area. Read More»

More than 1,600 will graduate Friday in Fayette

Graduation for the Class of 2013 is here. Graduation ceremonies for the 1,663 seniors across the Fayette County School System are scheduled for Friday at the respective high schools.

The five high schools will hold graduation ceremonies at their respective stadiums at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 24.

Inclement weather plans call for each school to hold the ceremonies in the same locations on Saturday, May 25.

If held Saturday, ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. at Sandy Creek and at 10 a.m. at the other schools.

Clayton State to offer minor in Film

Clayton State University is positioning itself to be a part of the rapidly growing film industry that is about to take shape in Fayette County. The university announced recently that a Film minor will be offered in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

“In response to the explosion of the film industry in the metro Atlanta area, Clayton State introduces the Department of Visual and Performing Arts’ new Film Minor,” said university relations director John Shiffert. The Ga. Dept. of Education (DOE) last week released its first Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) which measures Georgia public schools on a broad set of academic criteria. The new index methodology revealed that the average scores of Fayette’s elementary, middle and high schools were significantly higher than the state average and were in the top three school systems in metro Atlanta.
